The ubiquitous Voix Céleste is typically a single rank of pipes yielding a mild string tone, found in Swell divisions and intended for use with a Salicional or Viola da Gamba. The name was coined in France in the 1840's; a few writers inappropriately use it as a generic term for all celestes.
