Flûte de Pédale French |
Grove describes this stop as “the 8' or 4' stopped wooden rank in the French classical organ, but often also an 8' open metal stop of principal quality”. Williams calls it “8' or 4' open or stopped rank of wooden opens [sic], on most [French] organs from the second half of the 16th cent.”
We have no corroborating evidence that this stop was actually a principal, and ample evidence that the French knew perfectly well the difference between flutes and principals.
Flute de Pedale 8', Pedale; Pilgrim Congregational Church, Duluth. Minnesota, USA; Jaeckel 1988. This is the only known example.
